“The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from 1950 until today”
17 September - 20 November 2016

On Friday, 16 September 2016 at 20.00, an Exhibition of works from the Alpha Bank Art Collection opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in the city of Rethymnon.  The Exhibition showcases 60 paintings and prints dating from 1950 to today, that depict the evolution of contemporary Greek art at a time of radical change.

The Exhibition highlights works by avant-garde artists of that time Yannis Gaitis,  Vlassis Caniaris, Panayotis Tetsis, Nikos Kessanlis, Dimitri Perdikidis, Theodoros Stamos and Mario Prassinos as well as artists who have since defined Greek art’s international presence, such as Yannis Psychopedis, Chryssa Romanos, Yannis Bouteas, Chryssa (Vardea),  Stephen Antonakos, Niki Kanagini, Vassilis Sperantzas, Kyriakos Mortarakοs, Jason Molfessis and Alecos Levidis. It further includes works by representatives of more modern tendencies, namely Marilena Zamboura, Manolis Zacharioudakis, Nikos Alexiou, George Lappas,  Daphne Angelidou and Maria Giannakaki. At the same time, the highly interesting development of Greek printmaking is unraveled through the works of Vasso Katraki, A. Tassos (Alevizos), Costas Grammatopoulos, Tonia Nikolaidou, George Varlamos, Rena Tzolakis, Michalis Arfaras, Dimitra Siaterli, Mary Schina, Vicky Tsalamata and Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos.

The Exhibition’s main section was including paintings dating from 1920-1940, by preceding prominent artists Konstantinos Parthenis, George Bouzianis, Theophrastos Triantafyllidis, Nikiforos Lytras, Spyros Papaloukas and Gerassimos Steris. These works, that accurately portray the tendencies prevailing at the time, had a profound impact on the ideas of the next generation of artists.

The Alpha Bank Collection, one of the greatest art collections created by banking institutions and foundations in Greece, comprises 5.500 works of primarily modern Greek art. It is the result of the gradual merger, between 2000 and 2014, of the individual art collections formerly owned by Credit Bank, Ionian Bank, Popular Bank, Emporiki Bank and Citibank.

Apart from organising exhibitions and being active in the field of publishing, the Collection further participates in joint exhibitions, events and sponsorship programmes concerning Greek art. As part of its programme of presenting its works around Greece, in the summer of 2016 the Exhibition was initially presented at the Modern Greek Art Museum on the island of Rhodes, before going on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete.
